The Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure® Story

Nancy G. Brinker promised her dying sister, Susan G. Komen, she would do everything in her power to end breast cancer forever. In 1982, that promise became Susan G. Komen for the Cure® and launched a global breast cancer movement. Today Komen for the Cure is the world’s largest grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists fighting to save lives, empower people, ensure quality care for all and energize science to find the cure.

The Northwest Ohio Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure® – along with those who generously support us with their talent, time and resources – is working to better the lives of people facing breast cancer throughout our 24 county service area. Through events like the Komen Northwest Ohio Race for the Cure, we will be distributing more than $778,269 in the 2009-2010 fiscal year toward our mission to save lives and end breast cancer forever. Approximately $569,200 of the total monies raised will be used for local breast cancer education, screening and treatment programs for the underserved in Northwest Ohio and Southeast Michigan. The remaining funds will be awarded to the National Susan G. Komen for the Cure Grants program and be directed solely to fund research at the National level. Join us in our fight against breast cancer by calling 419-724-CURE (2873).
